LAKE WINNEBAGO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Sturgeon spearing season is less than ten days away, but the ice conditions around major spearing spots like Lake Winnebago remain a bit questionable.
Whether you’re ice fishing or spearing for prehistoric monsters, it’s always important to know how much ice is beneath you. But that can change rather quickly when you’re walking across the lake.
“The keyword is variable. You might have 10-12 inches of ice in some areas, and then just a little bit of a distance away you might be on 4-5 inches of new ice,” says DNR Fisheries Biologist Ryan Koenigs, “It’s really important this year, like any other year – but especially this year – is to exercise caution and know what ice conditions are where they plan to travel.”
With the warmer weather this year, Koenigs recommends keeping a close eye on how the temperature may be impacting the ice. Spearers should always check with local fishing clubs before hitting the ice.
The sturgeon spearing season opens on February 8th.
