OCONTO, WI (WTAQ) – The past month or so has been tough for the Oconto community. Residents have dealt with high river levels and flooding causing damage to homes and basements – along with the tragic house fire that claimed the lives of four people.
But instead of dwelling on tragedy and misfortune, neighbors around Oconto seem to be coming together for the better.
“We’re always looking forward to the better, brighter future with less tragedy,” City Administrator Sara Perrizo says, “As things happen, we certainly come together to help the people that are affected and help do what we can to help them move forward to that brighter future.”
Fundraisers and other efforts are being organized to help those in need – whether it’s a neighbor with a flooded basement or the family of those killed in the blaze.
“From what I’ve seen, a lot of people are helping with that and contributing. It’s just really an almost overwhelming sense of community right now,” Perrizo tells WTAQ News, “It’s really just the community doing it themselves. We certainly support it as a city, but it’s all being organized by volunteers.”
A benefit for the family killed in the fire is set to be held in March.
