APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – A man wanted on two misdemeanor warrants could now be facing additional charges following a “violent, physical struggle” when officers attempted to take him into custody on Thursday.
Police were doing surveillance on a home along West Wisconsin Avenue around 9:00 p.m. when Deandre Rembert was spotted. He had two warrants for his arrest and had already fled from officers on two previous occasions. Officers then followed a vehicle he was riding in to a gas station at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Oneida Street.
When an officer approached the vehicle, Rembert reportedly got out and attacked the officer before trying to get into the driver’s seat and take off. But the officer was able to wrestle him out of the vehicle before he could get away. Rembert then ran off into the yards of a nearby residential neighborhood.
Officers were able to catch up with Rembert in a backyard, where another struggle ensued. He refused to cooperate – and attempted to disarm an officer. Police say at one point he told officers to “just shoot me.” A taser was fired, but was ineffective. Eventually, a K9 service dog was deployed to help take Rembert into custody.
Rembert was taken to a hospital for treatment of the minor injury he suffered from the dog bite. As he was being taken from the hospital to the jail in handcuffs, officers say he resisted again – trying to run away.
He will now face charges on the two active warrants, but police are recommending additional charges including two counts of resisting or obstructing an officer, one count of attempting to disarm a peace officer and two counts of battery to a law enforcement officer.
No formal charges have been filed in the case so far.
Three officers received minor injuries, but immediately returned to duty.
