GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The Red Cross is in desperate need of blood.
The Red Cross says they’re critically low on type O blood, specifically. Laura McGuire with the Red Cross says there’s less than a three day supply on shelves–and that’s bad. O Negative blood is the universal donor, and can be transferred to any blood type.
“If you’re even in an accident or the emergency room, the first thing personnel will do if they can’t type your blood is reach for O negative,” McGuire told WTAQ.
O positive can be used with any other positive type blood. McGuire says they’re not turning anyone away.
“You don’t need to know your blood type to come in to donate,” said McGuire. “And we’re looking for all blood types.”
Every day, the Red Cross says they must collect nearly 13,000 blood donations and more than 2,600 platelet donations for patients who rely on blood to survive.
