GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Brown County’s Executive Committee has unanimously approved a resolution to become a second amendment sanctuary.
It was a packed room for the executive board meeting Monday night. Dozens were there to voice their opinions about gun laws.
“One person made comment ‘We’re not going to take your guns away,’ that’s how it starts,” said one resident. “And she doesn’t decide it’s whoever in Washington or at the state that decides.”
“What laws don’t work? Banning assault weapons, banning high capacity magazines, confiscating weapons, the age requirement of more than 21 years does not work,” said another.
Those who spoke were overwhelmingly in favor of adopting a resolution to become a second amendment sanctuary. It’s not a legally binding resolution, but it says the county opposes laws that could lead to tighter gun control.
People were there to express support for stricter gun laws as well.
“A majority of Americans believe gun violence is a problem and they support common-sense restrictions on gun ownership,” said one resident.
“The idea of a sanctuary city or county is by its very nature a very bad idea. It’s unworkable, it’s divisive, it’s undemocratic its un-Americana,” said another resident.
While the board made changes to the resolution, it was passed unanimously. Members signaled their support for the second amendment but ultimately decided the county does not have the right to override decisions made at the state level.
County supervisors say it’s meant to send a message about guns to state lawmakers. The resolution will go to the full Brown county board next week for a vote. It would make Brown County just the second sanctuary county in Wisconsin.
Florence County declared itself a Second Amendment sanctuary last November. Marinette County drafted a similar proposal but it was removed from the board’s agenda last month.
