(WNFL, Marquette Sports Information) – Marquette dropped its BIG EAST Conference opener on New Year’s Day to Creighton, 92-75, at Omaha, Nebraska.Markus Howard, Sacar Anim and Brendan Bailey led the Golden Eagles (10-3, 0-1 BIG EAST) with 18 points each
It was Bailey’s first career double-double who combined his 18 points with 11 rebounds.The Bluejays (12-2, 1-0 BIG EAST) took a 48-38 lead into the intermission on the strength of 50 percent shooting in the first half and a solid 45 percent in the second half.Mitchell Ballock and Ty-Shon Alexander scored 24 and 21 points, respectively, to lead Creighton which scored 17 points off turnovers and 17 points off fast breaks compared to 11 points off turnovers and five points off fast breaks for Marquette.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 1 p.m. against No. 10 Villanova at Fiserv Forum.
