GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Twenty-five people are reportedly displaced following an apartment fire on Green Bay’s west side.
The fire broke out around 7:45 p.m. Saturday evening at the Birchwood Apartments on the 2600 block of Trojan Drive.
The Green Bay Metro Fire Department reports four fire engines were intially sent to the scene, where firefighters spotted smoke on the back side of the building.
Fire was located on the third floor of the complex, originating in a bathroom ceiling. It then spread to bathroom walls on the second and third floors. Firefighters cut holes in the roof to release smoke that had collected in the attic area.
Crews worked for about an hour to find hot spots on multiple floors, and had to pull walls and ceilings to reach fire in the void spaces of the building.
One firefighter was treated at the scene for breathing issues, but later returned to help with operations.
A Green Bay Metro bus was used to houose the displaced people on scene due to cold weather.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. It caused an estimated $60,000 in damage.
