ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Firefighters have responded to at least three major fires around the area since Tuesday afternoon, but using water in such frigid weather can often be a challenge within itself.
Firefighters in Chilton, Green Bay, and Ashwaubenon were all forced to fight the elements as well as fires this week. Ashwaubenon Lead Fire Inspector Daniel Peterson says sub-zero temperatures can make things a bit complicated.
“You could run into concerns with hydrants freezing up to the point where you can’t operate them, and then just simply slipping concerns. You’re not noticing all of the water accumulating as a firefighter,” Peterson says.
Firefighters were able to avoid any major issues while responding to a house fire in Ashwaubenon overnight on Tuesday.
“It actually went very well considering the temperatures and the typical concerns that you have. We were able to get water there in about the normal amount of time you would in any other type of fire,” says Peterson.
One of the six residents at the Early Street home tried to put out the flames and sustained minor injuries. He was treated at the hospital. No word on yet on how that fire began.
