PESHTIGO, WI (WTAQ) – A woman who put herself in harm’s way to save two children has been nominated in America’s Favorite Crossing Guard Contest.
Gail Bantes, 82, has served the Peshtigo School District for many years. She was a bus driver for 43 years before becoming a crossing guard for the past several years.
In February of 2019, Gail was hit by a vehicle while helping two children cross the street. Officials say she pushed the children out of the way before being hit herself.
The public can vote for their favorite crossing guard in the contest until Thursday, December 12th.
The top five crossing guards across the U.S. with the highest number of votes will be judged by a panel to determine the final winner.
The winner will receive a pep rally, award ceremony and $500 for new crossing gear and accessories.
