GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – While some people plan to protest during Sunday’s Packers game, the Oneida Nation is taking a different approach by releasing a new commercial to address Washington’s use of a derogatory name and mascot.
“The protest is obviously the right of individuals to express their freedom of speech and assembly and we don’t discourage that, but a protest happens one day and this it’s over. This is something that has a longer shelf like and something we want to promote more into the future,” said Bobbi Webster.
Webster is the Oneida Nation Public Relations Director and tells FOX 11 the commercial showcases who the tribe is while promoting the individuality of each member.
“We are very tall short, young old, we are police officers, judges, nurses, we are happy children, strong men, we have black hair, brown hair, blue eyes and we wanted to show that Oneida is very diverse in who we are.”
The commercial will be played on the jumbotron during Sunday’s game at Lambeau Field. It can also be found on Facebook and Twitter.
“We are hoping this commercial and initiative will build a better partnership, a better appreciation and mutual respect for our neighbors and our community,” said Webster.
Neither the Packers or Washington Football team is commenting on protests planned ahead of Sunday’s game.
However, the Redskins has said the team name will never be changed following past protests.
