ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ) — Over 600 Packers fans spent over three hours shoveling out icy Lambeau Field on Wednesday ahead of Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins.
Some came for the money.
“[I’m here] to make some extra money for the holidays,” Lisa Wescott told WTAQ with shovel in hand.
Others came for the glory…
“It’s kind of a bucket list thing,” Al Kratky said. “I always wanted to do it, but never had time.”
Some came for something greater…
“Devotion to the Packers,” that’s why shoveler Nicky showed up for his third time. “I mean really…this is what it’s all about.”
Bobby Anderson is a Packers shareholder, he shoveled while decked out in a Packers lacrosse helmet, face mask, and custom cheese head.
“My love for the Green Bay Packers [brought me out here]…I’ve had an amazing time,” Anderson told WTAQ. “I’ve been in Georgia the past 21 years, but just moved back to Green Bay. This is where my heart is.”
Regardless of why they showed up, show up they did. In force.
“We have 25 people on our staff,” said Lambeau Facility Manager Todd Edlebeck. “We couldn’t do what we can do with 600 people.”
Shovelers cleared out rows, benches, upper decks, walkways, and even the parking lot. Massive, portable chutes were used to slide the snow from the bleachers down onto the sidelines, where it was scooped up into big trucks that hauled it into large piles outside.
It’s tough, cold work, and a bit like herding cats, but at the end of the day every single shoveler will get $12 an hour for their time and the gratitude of every Packers fan who trudges into Lambeau this Sunday.
