GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – A February 26th trial date has been set for the man who allegedly broke into a church and set a fire.
Mackenzie Guillen, 18, faces five charges – including burglary and arson – for the April 30th incident at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Allouez.
The trial date was set at a hearing Monday. Plea negotiations with prosecutors continue and the case may not go to trial, according to defense attorney Alf Langan.
Guillen allegedly smashed a window to gain access to the church, and then set fire to papers on the floor of the church’s gathering space. No one was injured. Guillen also allegedly vandalized three homes the same night before being arrested.
Church staff has sent a letter to the court asking for treatment for Guillen, not punishment.
At one point, Guillen had been found not mentally competent to stand trial, but after treatment, the case has continued.
