GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Alex Gillis tells FOX 11 he’s excited to have more classes like these in his curriculum.
“So like right now I’m creating an app that has multiple games in it.”
Gillis is a student at Lombardi Middle School.
“I also like cooking and performing, I’m in a musical this year.”
It’s one of four schools included in a grant to increase STEM programs.
The $150, 000 grant comes from the NEA Foundation.
The principal of Lombardi Middle School Lucas Lechnir tells FOX 11 the money will be used to integrate STEM education into the school’s comprehensive learning.
“So what it switches up again is we want to focus on what the students will be doing not just what they’re going to be hearing.”
He says the purpose of integrating STEM is to make sure students know all options are open when picking a career.
“We want to strengthen the understanding of those different industries and what they can provide because as teachers, we’re teachers and that’s our job. We’re not working in these other areas.”
So while Gillis might not know what he wants to be when he grows up
“Maybe something in the computer area.”
He wants other kids to learn about STEM too.
“You get to be creative and you get to do so many cool things like it’s you and your personal thing.” Like you can design it how you want and you can add your own backgrounds and fonts and pictures and stuff like that. So much room for creativity, it’s a lot of fun.”
The schools are still deciding how best to use the grant money.
