GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU-WTAQ) — A Military Veteran who lost his legs in Afghanistan says he still has more to give his country.
Jason Church, a Wisconsin native and former staffer for US Senator Ron Johnson, told The John Muir Show that his desire to serve still burns and he sees going to Washington as a means of continuing his service.
“Even though the Taliban took my legs, America’s enemies have not extinguished my desire to serve. It still burns, it’s still there,” said Church. “I feel like this is a way I can give back to a country that has given me so, so much.”
Church is one of three declared GOP candidates for next spring’s special election. Others include State Senator Tom Tiffany and Edgar businessman Michal Opela Sr. The Democratic field is led by Wausau School Board President Tricia Zunker.
Last week it was announced that Republican think tank No Better Friend Corp would host a Republican debate between Church and Tiffany in Wausau on December 12th. That debate comes ten days after nominating papers are due for the election.
The primary for the special election will be held on February 18th. The general election will be held on May 12th, and the winner will then have to run again in six months.
