FOND DU LAC COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Authorities say a training exercise paid off when they rescued a bowhunter in Fond du Lac County.
The sheriff’s department says that just after 5:30 a.m. Thursday, dispatchers received a call that a hunter had tripped and fallen on an arrow, resulting in a deep cut to his arm. The hunter was alone and put on a makeshift tourniquet to slow the bleeding.
The hunter was on public land west of Hwy. Y, south of Oakfield.
Emergency crews used a UTV and a pickup truck to get as close to the scene as they could, then walked in to meet the hunter, using GPS coordinates provided by dispatchers. The hunter was more than .6 miles from the DNR parking lot.
The hunter was taken to the hospital.
The sheriff’s office says emergency crews conducted a training exercise on the same land earlier this year.
In that exercise, just as in Thursday’s rescue, crews used GPS technology to find their way to certain locations.
