MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ) – Local and statewide leaders announced a renewed effort to make Manitowoc a national landmark.
Senator Tammy Baldwin, Governor Tony Evers, and the city’s mayor, Justin Nichols, are eyeing up the lakeshore as the location for a National Marine Sanctuary.
Including Lake Michigan as part of a national marine sanctuary has been a topic for years.
It started when NOAA, the federal government agency that oversees waterways, said in 2015 it wanted to help conserve shipwrecks like these in Wisconsin.
The proposed sanctuary would include Lake Michigan waters next to Manitowoc, Sheboygan and Ozaukee counties.
People who support the proposal say it’s an opportunity for economic growth.
