GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary is releasing two eagles back into the wild Saturday morning.
The young eagles were brought in over the summer with injuries, and have spent months in rehabilitation. Sanctuary Curator Lori Bankson says a lot of work has gone into the recovery of the birds.
She says “it really is that really great moment of all the hard work we put into it as a community, to see these animals be able to return back to the wild.”
Bankson thinks they have the perfect place to introduce the eagles back into their natural habitat.
“Releasing each eagle one-by-one along the shore, it’s a beautiful place to release. The eagles are out fishing and out roosting and flying in that area, so we’re pretty excited to let these eagles be back where they belong,” says Bankson.
Bankson also encourages anyone who finds an injured animal, especially something like a predatory bird, to give them a call before dealing with the situation themselves.
“The number one thing is just safety and communication. We work with a lot of great people in the community that we can get somebody out to help transport these animals in to us,” Bankson says.
The release event begins at 9 a.m. near the Big Wheel at Bay Beach Amusement Park. The public is invited to attend.
