GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Winter is here, but it’s not always easy to cover the bills to keep the house warm.
That’s why Wisconsin Public Service is reminding customers to take the proper steps to stay warm this season. Matt Cullen from WPS recommends customers check out the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program.
“It’s something that’s available at no charge to a customer. Another important thing to keep in mind is that a customer does not need to be behind on their energy bill to receive assistance,” says Cullen “energy assistance is available and they should check their eligibility requirements or see if they qualify to receive energy assistance as we move into the winter heating season.”
The winter heating season generally runs from November through April. That span of time in Wisconsin tends to see the highest use of heat and the highest heating costs.
There are also several different, simple ways for everyone to save a few extra dollars in energy costs.
Cullen recommends “lowering the temperature of your thermostat 7-10 degrees while you’re asleep or you’re away from home. Your heating unit is not running when you might not be home to use that added heat that it’s generating, or you might not be able to notice that heat.”
He also suggests minimizing the use of space heaters, which can significantly increase energy consumption if they are left on for several hours.
The state Department of Administration awards assistance based on several factors, including household size and income. Anyone looking to check eligibility guidelines should visit the program website or call 1-866-HEATWIS (432-8947).
Those with questions about energy bills or payment options can reach out to WPS at 800-450-7260. Payment arrangements may be available for some customers who may be behind on bills.
