GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Governor Tony Evers took another day to ask the state legislature to look at two proposed gun bills during a special legislative session next month.
The Governor’s visit in Green Bay on Tuesday comes the same day that Wisconsin Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald says he will not hold hearings or debate on the bills.
“I think that is a ridiculous response,” Evers said. “He is telling that 80 percent of people in Wisconsin that he is going to be in charge. I think that is an abysmal response. He has the responsibility to let his senate vote on this. If they vote it down, fine, it’s not fine by me, but at least they are on the record.”
The Governor says he wants to see the approved bills on his desk, but at the very least, he wants to see a yes and no vote taken in both chambers.
“Just to stand up and say we are going to gavel in and gavel out, that is not what the people of Wisconsin expect out of their legislative leadership.”
The Republican claims “the support’s not there” to tackle the issues.
Republicans say the issue is on the people behind the gun, not the guns themselves.
“It is an absolute myth that mass shootings are happening because of people with mental health,” Evers said. “There is no data to support that. Do I support having the state kick in money to support people with mental health issues? Yes, but that is myth to think that it is going to solve this problem.”
Democrats point to polls showing 80% support for the ideas as a reason to vote on them.
