OCONTO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Residents living near the waters of Green Bay in Oconto continue to deal with standing water caused by heavy rain and wind from Monday.
Terry DeBenedetto says “I hope it stops. We’ve had enough.”
The high water has slowly receded but continues to leave damage around Oconto. DeBenedetto is concerned about the lasting impact of recent flooding.
“Neighbors have a lot of standing water in their yard and that can’t be good. I’m sure there’s erosion problems. Boat landing has been closed on and off due to high water. The city is trying what they can because when that wind blows, it’s very damaging,” says DeBenedetto.
The Oconto area has seen flooding at least five times since the beginning of summer. Linda Borah has lived along Harbor Road for 40 years and says nothing has come close to this since the 1980s.
“It’s a summer of being overwhelmed. When you think it’s getting better it’s like, ‘here it goes again.’ It’s just really crazy,” Borah says, “I don’t ever remember seeing it fill up the river and it literally just runs over the road. You just start scrambling cause you don’t know how high it’s going to come.”
Property owners are looking at ways to avoid constant flooding, but are also just hoping the rain will go away.
