GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A Wisconsin state representative is asking for understanding from social media commenters as his daughter faces new drug-related charges.
State Rep. John Nygren, R-Marinette, posted a lengthy message on Facebook Thursday. The post comes one day after his daughter Cassie was charged with delivering illegal articles to an inmate and manufacturing/delivering amphetamine.
Cassie Nygren, 30, was already in jail awaiting a February trial on charges she supplied the fentanyl-laced heroin that killed a pregnant woman and her unborn child.
John Nygren, who has been open about his daughter’s struggles with addiction, writes in the post the family does not have information above and beyond what has been reported in the news. He also sought to clarify what he believes are misconceptions about Cassie Nygren’s case.
The family has never bailed her out, we have never hired any fancy lawyers, and we have never asked for or received any special treatment. She has never gotten out of any charges because of who she is related to. In fact I would suggest that the facts point to her being charged rather severely. Something the family has never disagreed with.
John Nygren also asked the public to be careful about commenting on social media.
For us we will continue to love and support Cassie, while continuing to provide a safe and loving home for her son. For those reading all we ask is that before joining the angry social media mob on this or any issue. Know the facts and realize that but for the grace of god, you could someday find yourself in a similar position.
John Nygren has said his daughter’s troubles were the inspiration for the HOPE Agenda, a package of legislation aimed at combating the heroin and opioid epidemic. Gov. Scott Walker signed the bills into law in 2017.
Cassie Nygren is due back in court on Tuesday.
