SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ) – A new and improved terminal at the Shawano Municipal Airport will carry the same name the old one did.
A rededication ceremony was held this week, keeping the terminal associated with the name Wilmer Zeuske.
“It was named Wilmer H. Zueske field in 1954. Wilmer was the first aviator from Shawano to die in World War II.”
Airport Commission Secretary Doug Engel says the new terminal was long overdue, and it comes with new amenities that the old one did not have.
“The chimney was falling down and the building was not handicapped assessable,” he said. “This one has a pilot lounge, planning facilities and office space.”
Engel says the story of Zueske was that he was on a bombing mission in 1942 when he did not make his destination.
“That flight of six got lost in weather on their way to the target and Wilmer Zeuske was discovered dead.”The airport was dedicated to Zueske years ago, but this time they have a plaque on the wall to remember him.
