OCONTO FALLS, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A popular pumpkin farm in Oconto Falls is in the midst of its final season.
But after one of the children in the family received a life-changing diagnosis, Delzer’s pumpkin farm isn’t just focused on gords for Halloween.
“My little boy was diagnosed this summer with a really rare form of cancer called Langerhans cell histiocytosis,” said Jessica Delzer.
Jessica tells FOX 11 her son, Gabe, is eight years old and fighting cancer.
“Our family decided that this would be a really great opportunity to raise awareness for cancer, recognize how hard Gabe is fighting and just be supportive.”
Sunday’s green and gold event at the Delzer Pumpkin Farm is in honor of Gabe, and other children like him.
“Gabe really battled with back pain for about a year and a half before we finally figured out what it was,” said Jessica.
When Gabe was diagnosed this summer, Jessica says she and her family were relieved to know what was causing his pain.
But that relief didn’t last for long.
“Once we started treatment the reality really sunk in, seeing him in pain, seeing him afraid, you know, explaining it to our other children. You know it’s really hard, really hard.”
“They put like things in his port which is right here and they put medicine into it,” recalled Lizzy Delzer, Gabe’s older sister.
She says she was happy to see so many people come to the event.
“It’s nice to know that they all care for him.”
The green and gold weekend gave people a chance to show their support for the family.
And that’s exactly what visitors did.
Despite the rare cancer, the Delzers say they are confident that Gabe will beat this.
The family adds while Gabe’s diagnosis isn’t the only reason they’re closing the pumpkin farm this year, they are excited to spend more time with family after this season.
Delzer’s will be open every weekend for Halloween activities through October.
