TOWN OF MARCELLON, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — An Amish horse and buggy created big problems for the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office this weekend.
Officials say the unoccupied vehicle was reported as a runaway just before noon on Saturday along Highway 22 in the Town of Marcellon. The owner said the horse had been tied to a post, but was able to free itself and ran off.
Sheriff’s officials were dispatched to the area to warn drivers about the incident to prevent the animal from causing an accident. They caught up with the horse as it turned eastbound onto Highway 33, according to WAOW TV.
One squad car was able to get in front of the horse and slowed down to try to slow the animal down as well, but it continued at full-stride and ran into the car.
An equine vet was called to the scene for an injury to the horse’s leg, which resulted in the horse having to be put down.
The deputy was not injured but a crash report will need to be completed for the vehicle.
In a statement, the Columbia County Sheriff’s office “[extends] its sincere and heartfelt thoughts to the area Amish community in the loss of their horse.”
