CHILTON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The undefeated Chilton Tigers had to take their show on the road for Friday’s game with Brillion.
Kiel High School was able to rent its field out after Chilton’s field became unplayable this afternoon.
“We tried to get our field ready today, we pumped a lot of water, we were trying to move as much as we could, and then the rainfall around 11 o’clock was just too substantial,” Corey Behnke, one of the Chilton High School football coaches and activities director said.
“The reward of having senior night here versus the risk of one of our kids or Brillion kids sustaining a significant injury was just too high,” Behnke said.
This isn’t the first time that Chilton High School’s football field has started to fill up with water. They say their pumps can’t keep up.
“We dig holes in the low spots where the water runs, and we run hosing across the track into the drainage and we just pump water,” Behnke said.
But Chilton’s seniors will still get their senior night. The game was moved to Kiel High School’s new $3.1 million facility.
“For our community to be able to fund this and then we can turn around and help other communities, it’s just great to have people come into Kiel and be part of our facility,” Kiel High School Athletic Director Steve Walsh said.
While a home game would have been nice, it’s about the kids.
“I’m thrilled we can play on a surface that’s going to be consistent everywhere they step and lower the risk of injury,” Behnke said.
Our recent wet weather was also a big problem for Fruth Field in Fond du Lac.
They played their homecoming game Thursday night after the river spilled into the stadium last week.
Fond du Lac’s athletic director says it was to keep the field from getting too torn up before the playoffs.
