ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ) – With much anticipation for the new movie “Joker” starting in theaters this week, it also brings some fear and a need for law enforcement to have extra eyes watching.
More than seven years ago, a mass shooting at a theater in Colorado occurred during a screening of the Dark Knight Rises.
While it was not proven that the Joker character inspired the violent attack, it has brought concern with the new moving coming out, and Captain Jody Crocker of Ashwaubenon Public Safety says they are aware of it.
“With any type of heightened threat level, we can’t ignore that,” Crocker said. “Our agency has taken steps to beef up patrol and we are also aware that there has been added security at our cinema in Ashwaubenon.”
He says they will have extra patrol when the movie is showing at Marcus Theaters. He says they are prepared but things like this can’t be taken lightly and can happen anywhere.
“If you look at history back in Aurora, Colorado, I am sure that people did not expect that to happen at that time.”
Late-night showings started Thursday night in Ashwaubenon.
15 showings are scheduled for Friday.
