MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Steven Avery’s lawyer has shared photos of a letter she says a prison inmate sent her, confessing to the 2005 killing of Teresa Halbach.
Avery and his nephew, Brendan Dassey, are serving life sentences for Halbach’s murder. The two men from Manitowoc County have maintained their innocence.
The case received national attention with the 2015 release of the Netflix series “Making a Murderer,” which cast doubt upon the process used to convict the men.
Attorney Kathleen Zellner posted the confession on Twitter.
The letter refers to a $100,000 reward Zellner announced earlier this month to help find Halbach’s “real killer.”
He indicates that it is what made him decide to speak out about what he knows.
Evans also asks for more money because he has additional information for Zellner.
According to the letters, he was at Avery’s Salvage Yard when he ended up hitting a woman with his vehicle. He goes on to say that he attempted to cover up her death and explained how Steven Avery was tied in.
In her tweets, Zellner indicated she does not consider the confession credible.
The letter Zellner shared is signed by Joseph Evans. He was convicted of killing his wife in Marinette County in 2008.
Zellner’s release of the letter comes one day after a Newsweek report that the filmmakers of the upcoming series “Convicting A Murderer” received a confession from an inmate. It is not clear if that confession is the same one Zellner received.
Avery is appealing his conviction in state court. His latest appeals are due Oct. 4.
Dassey’s most recent appeals were rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court, and he currently has no appeals pending.
