GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Barricaded roads may be an inconvenience, but staying clear of flooded roads can be life-saving.
It does not take much water to leave a vehicle stranded on a flooded road.
Shauna Walesh of the Green Bay Metro Fire Department says getting stuck is not the only danger of driving through flooded waters.
“There is everything from electrical wires to sharp objects and we don’t want people to get caught up in that.”
She says it is not even the best idea to walk through the waters.
“Just because of the chemicals and there could possibly be sewage in it that could make you sick.”
Walesh says homes can also flood and people may need to leave for safety.
“When you start having water that is getting close to electrical cords or outlets and you start seeing sparks or hearing a crackling, you want to make sure you are out of the water.”
On Wednesday, Green Bay Police had to evacuate some businesses on Mason Street and Emergency Management had people living on Monroe Road between Hoffman road in Bellevue and Dickenson Road in Ledgeview evacuate.
She says while fires are not common during floods, it is always a good idea to be safe than sorry.
“If you are told to evacuate, lock up your home and if you do have time, disconnect your utilities and appliances.”
Green Bay Metro Fire had to make one rescue Wednesday afternoon for a vehicle that was stuck in standing water.
