WINNECONNE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Being shot at, coming home from a day at the fair, is not something you’d ever expect to happen.
But that’s exactly how things played out for Jordan Calewarts.
“I still don’t believe it actually happened, ’cause it’s not something that happens around here.”
It did happen to Calewarts, his fiancée and their two kids the night of August 3rd in Winneconne.
“I had my whole family with me, so it doesn’t really sit too well with me when it puts others in danger, not only my life, you know.”
The family had been coming home from the Winnebago County Fair, heading westbound on Highway 116 between Highway 45 and County Road M.
Calewarts tells FOX 11 that suddenly, they heard an almost-deafening sound. He thought he’d been shot.
After making sure everyone was safe, the family made their way home. That’s when Calewarts says he counted about 13 holes in his windshield.
“When I got home, and I started looking at it, I said, ‘Dang, you know, that’s a gunshot, not rocks!’ You know, it wasn’t something somebody could’ve thrown.”
Calewarts concern prompted him to contact the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department and file an incident report.
“It appears to be more of a random type of incident, rather than targeted at the individuals, from what we can tell, but there’s very limited information at this point,” Capt. Dave Mack of the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department said.
A detective has since been assigned to the case.
The sheriff’s department also said that the marks on Calewarts windshield did appear to be consistent with a shotgun, but no direct evidence has been found to determine that.
But this random incident may not be the only one….
According to the police, there have been similar complaints reported on that same day, around the same area and at about the same time.
