SEYMOUR, WI (WTAQ) – The “Home of the Hamburger” will be serving up burgers a-plenty this weekend at the 31st Burger Fest in Seymour.
Burger Fest is a volunteer-run festival that raises funds for scholarships and community projects in the Home of the Hamburger, Seymour, Wisconsin.
It draws people from around the world.
Burger Fest started in 1989 to celebrate the birth of the burger in Seymour in 1885. The historical figure, Hamburger Charlie, invented the hamburger way back then at the Outagamie County Fair.
John Steltz plays the iconic role of Hamburger Charlie each year.
“Seymour is the Home of the Hamburger and we fully embrace that here and that is what makes it exciting for the residents.”
To celebrate the hamburger, Burger Fest includes the grilling and building of a 250-pound burger that is served up to those in attendance Saturday.
“We celebrate that with having the world’s largest and longest hamburger parade and we have the worlds largest ketchup slide.”
For Steltz he says being the home of the first hamburger is not something to take lightly.
“You think about all of these other places like McDonald’s, Burger King and Hardees and they all promote their own hamburgers, but it all started right here in Seymour.”
What makes Seymour burgers special?
“We do have our special Hamburger Charlie seasoning on them that you can’t get anywhere else, Steltz says.
Events run Friday and Saturday in Seymour.
