MOUNTAIN, WI (WTAQ) – A popular YMCA camp in Oconto County is canceling the remainder of their summer camps due to recent storm damage.
Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya announced on Wednesday that its summer camps for August 4-9 and August 11-16 will not be held as crews continue to clean up damage from devastating winds that hit the area on July 19.
“Major repairs remain yet to be tackled, we are still at work on our number one recovery goal and that is cleaning up trees around our 158 acres of property. Last week at this time, felled trees prevented entrance by car into camp and this week professionals have determined several clusters of trees need to be removed for safety reasons,” Max Clark, camping services executive for the Greater Green Bay YMCA, says in a news release.
Camp officials say that 29 buildings were damaged in the storms.
“Providing the safest environment possible for our children at camp is the priority along with delivering a quality camp experience to campers and their families. This necessitates that we have program spaces restored and make many repairs to our damaged buildings. Our High Ropes Course and Target Sports Area will need to be completely rebuilt. At this time we are estimating 6-10 weeks to have the main camp operational as our building and site needs continue to evolve. We hope to be open for the highly-anticipated weekends of Father Daughter Camp in September,” Sean Elliot, president and CEO of Greater Green Bay YMCA, says in a news release.
Additionally, the camp is seeking out volunteers age 18 and older to help with operating chain saws and wood chippers, and splitting wood.
Those interested are asked to sign up online prior to arriving at the camp.
Also, the camp is accepting monetary donations.
