GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – With temperatures nearing triple digits, the Salvation Army of Greater Green Bay wants to remind citizens that their doors are open to provide relief from the heat.
Their building on Union Court will operate as a cooling center throughout the summer.
“Listen, it’s hot,” says Congressman Mike Gallagher. “So the fact that they are providing this service for people that find it hard to escape from the heat is huge.”
Representative Gallagher was at the Salvation Army on Friday afternoon helping to pass out water bottles.
Specifically, the center will be open on days when the temperature reaches 85 degrees and above.
“They have a ton of super-dedicated professionals here at the Salvation Army,” he says. “A lot of volunteers that come out, it’s just an incredible organization.”
Experts say dehydration can happen quickly, especially with a heat index over 100 degrees, as is expected throughout parts of the state.
“Extreme heat brings dangers to many in our community and offering a cool, safe place is one of the many ways we can serve those in need,” says Major Matt O’Neil, Area Coordinator of the Greater Green Bay Salvation Army.
The cooling center’s summer hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
