GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The Green Bay Police Department is investigating a drive-by shooting on the city’s west side that led to four being taken into custody on the Mason Street Bridge.
No one was hurt in the shooting and police believe they have all those responsible in custody.
According to police, a dispute over a love interest was the cause of the incident.
“I just can’t explain why someone would ruin their lives for something as silly as a dispute over a girl,” explains Green Bay Police Chief Andrew Smith.
First reports of the shooting, which took place on the corner of Biemeret and 14th streets, came in around 7:30 Thursday evening.
“For some reason, the individuals in this car were angry with the young man and went over to the house and shot multiple rounds,” says Smith.
Officers say it’s amazing that no one was hurt, considering that 15 to 20 people were on the corner having a water balloon fight before the shooting happened.
According to Chief Smith, at least 10 to 15 shots were fired.
Karen Williams says her home was targeted and her son received a warning message prior to the shooting happening.
According to her, the shooting was over a 17-year-old girl.
She was woken up just before shots were being fired.
“I fell to the ground,” says Williams. “I felt the whiz go past me and it was the bullet that went through my house.”
She says several of her family members were outside when the shooting happened and as the shooting wrapped up, her son took a paintball gun out of a vehicle in the driveway and started firing at the vehicle that fired the shots.
“When they were done shooting and he was driving past, he quickly popped the trunk, grabbed the gun, and started shooting up their vehicle as they were driving away,” she explains.
Chief Smith says that action helped officers later on.
“It takes a lot of presence of mind, I guess, to try and mark the car as its leaving,” he says.
Officers say that the suspects were stopped in a vehicle that had paintball markings sprayed on it.
Police say the people responsible were caught on the Mason Street Bridge.
Four individuals were taken into custody and police have recommended charges against three of them.
A fourth individual is still being questioned regarding their role.
Williams claims another home in the city was also shot at by the same people, but police could not confirm whether that happened.
