SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ) – Shawano Police are warning of fake twenty dollar bills being used at rummage sales.
Multiple reports have come in about counterfeit “motion picture use only” money being circulated around. Police Chief Dan Mauel says all reports come with the same story.
“The suspect is described as a man in his 60’s with a blue swimsuit with flowers and a white t-shirt with a dragon on it.
Chief Mauel says if you accept the money you will likely lose out.
He says its best to remain calm and do not confront the person, but simply say you can’t accept the money.
“Just say this money is no good, it is use for motion pictures only and it is not real so you can’t use it here.”
He says people who are running rummage sales should take time to look closely at the money being passed.
“Especially at rummage sales it needs to be done. Commercial businesses are used to dealing with fake tender, but people who run rummages sales sometimes are not.”
He says in some reports, the money was given to teens who were taking care of accepting the money for purchases.
It is legal to purchase the money online, but Mauel says it is illegal to circulate it.
Anyone with additional information should contact the Shawano Police Department.
