WASHINGTON, DC (WSAU) — A new book about how Republicans have handled the rise of President Trump features former House Speaker Paul Ryan, who paints a frustrating picture of his relationship with Trump.
According to excerpts of Tim Alberta’s American Carnage quoted by the Washington Post, Ryan says he attempted to have a working relationship with the Commander-in-Chief but it became increasingly difficult as time went by.
“I told myself I gotta have a relationship with this guy to help him get his mind right,” Ryan said. “Because I’m telling you, he didn’t know anything about government . . . I wanted to scold him all the time.”
Ryan adds that Trump has ignored calls from those in the party to moderate his message ahead of the 2020 election.
According to Alberta, Ryan saw retirement as some kind of “escape hatch,” because he couldn’t stand the thought of working in Washington another two years.
Ryan goes on to add that early in his Presidency the higher-ups in the part were able to talk Trump out of what he said were “knee-jerk” decisions and reactions. Decisions that in more recent months he says the President has been making.
American Carnage will be released next Tuesday.
