SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ) – The first major boating weekend in Shawano has passed and now that water levels at Shawano Lake are back to a normal level, but preparation for the battle for next year soon begins.
After a lengthy process of working through a Federal Government agency to approve raising the water levels for the boating season, Gary De Fere, President of Shawano Area Waterways Management says they got their wish just in time for the Fourth of July weekend.
“That really is such a big weekend here, and so we cut it close, but there is really nothing we can do about it.”
He says the weekend provided successful boating and that will continue for at least the rest of the season.
“We have the approval through September and of course that is through the major part of the boating season.”
He says there as not been much resistance in the process and most feel the waters levels should be normal.
He says they will start the 2020 request process in January because they can’t do it sooner. He says he still expects that it will take until nearly the Fourth of July before a decision is made again.
“It took about six or level days for the water levels to get back there. Everything is good, everyone is happy and now we will just have to work on the fight to make it permanent.”
