MADISON, WI (Wisconsin Radio Network) — Governor Tony Evers signed the ‘step therapy’ bill into law on Tuesday, one of two bills designed to improve patient care.
Step Therapy requires doctors to try less expensive treatments before other, more expensive options are offered. The law allows patients to appeal the move in extreme cases.
“This bill places some of the control back into the hands of healthcare providers and patients to decide the best treatment regimen for their medical condition,” according to Evers
The other bill loosens restrictions placed on dialysis equipment that some patients can use in their homes.
“Two critically important bills that will help make healthcare more affordable and accessible, and make sure that patients can make the best decisions about their care in conjunction with their physicians,” Evers said in his signing message.
Both bills received bipartisan support on their way through the legislature.
