KEWAUNEE, WI (WTAQ) – A meeting is being planned in order to discuss the future of the Kewaunee Power Station, which is currently shuttered.
The nuclear plant closed in May of 2013 due to falling electricity prices and the federal government is looking to get feedback on the decommissioning process.
The owner must dismantle the site by 2073, while there are currently no specific plans for the site.
The Nuclear Energy Innovation and Modernization Act, a federal law which was passed earlier this year, requires the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to submit a report to Congress on ‘best practices’ for community advisory boards.
A series of meetings will be held across the country as a part of that process, including one in the Kewaunee area.
“We want to hear from members of the public on best practices, decision-making, and dialogue on the decommissioning process,” says Prema Chandrathil, public affairs officer for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Kewaunee does not have a community advisory board in place, which could be a topic at the meeting, according to Chandrathil.
The meeting will be held sometime between August and October and should be announced in the next few weeks.
