FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Fond du Lac firefighters put reporters behind the flames today.
Firefighters sent media members through three rounds of scenarios.
The first was to put out a fire on a fire simulator. Theater smoke filled the room to lower visibility.
“You’re wearing one of our self contained breathing apparatuses with a mask,” Assistant Chief of Training/Safety said.”So we gave you a taste of what it’s like to utilize that equipment and maybe a little taste of what claustrophobia is like with the feel of wearing that mask.”
The second scenario was a vehicle extrication. Two different types of tools were used to rip a door off, which in a real scenario, would allow emergency crews to access patients.
“We also had you work with our spreading tool and cutting tool to remove a door, to gain better access to that patient so we can tend to their injuries and eventually move them out of that opening,” Knowles said.
The final scenario involved harnesses, ropes and trust. Participants climbed down an 80 foot building while two firefighters controlled the ropes at the top of the building. This technique is used for what firefighters call a “technical rescue.”
