MENASHA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Menasha Police Department reports a Neenah Police officer shot and killed a man at an apartment complex Tuesday afternoon.
The state’s Department of Justice is handling the investigation into what happened.
The incident played out at the Butte des Morts View Apartments in the 900 block of Tayco Street in Menasha, not far from the city’s border with Fox Crossing.
The Department of Justice expects to be on scene until about noon today, according to the Menasha Police Department.
At about 1 pm Tuesday, the Menasha Police Department says it was serving a search warrant for an internet crime against children investigation.
In the process, Lt. Adam Schulz of the Menasha Police Department tells FOX 11 a Neenah Police Officer shot and killed the subject of the investigation after he approached officers with a knife.
“Obviously we go into these things with investigations hoping for the best outcome and this is obviously not an outcome that we are looking for.”
“I’d seen all the squads, but I thought, I wonder what’s going on, I had no idea,” said Ron Scheurle, who has lived in the apartments for about 20 years.
Scheurle tells FOX 11 he wasn’t home when the shooting happened.
“I’m actually kind of shocked. This has always been a peaceful, quiet neighborhood.”
We do not know the identity of the police officer who shot the man. However, the DOJ says the officer had been put on administrative leave, per department policy.
“Per our policy and per the Neenah Police Department’s policy, the scene has been turned over to the Department of Justice, specifically DCI, who is now heading up the investigation,” said Schulz.
“I think it’s a shame that somebody got killed, but you know you need to respect the officers of the law,” said Scheurle. “They tell you to calm down or put a gun down or whatever, do what they tell you to do.”
The DOJ reports officers tried to save the man’s life on the scene, but he died from his injuries at Thedacare Regional Medical Center.
No one else was hurt in the incident.
The DOJ will forward its investigation findings to the Winnebago County District Attorney. It will be his decision whether any charges are filed against the officer.
