KEWAUNEE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A Lakeshore ATV Club is teaming up with leaders in Kewaunee County to improve the experience at the Riverview ATV Park, just Northwest of the city of Kewaunee.
Riders may expect changes in the coming months.
Over the past 30 years, Kelly Froelich tells FOX 11 he’s ridden a lot of different all-terrain-vehicles on a lot of different trails.
“I just like to go out for a nice relaxing ride, driving through nature, driving through the woods. Seeing the wildlife out there. And then once in a while, you want to hop on and get going a little faster.”
Froelich put his ATV through its paces Thursday morning at the Riverview ATV Park just outside of Kewaunee. The 350-acre site features 20 miles of trails. Kewaunee County owns the park, and the Bay Lake ATV Club volunteers do a lot of the maintenance.
“We’re working on updating trails, updating facilities. We’re going to be putting in a new wash pit. Updating the bathroom facilities. A new shelter. Redesigning some of our trails so that they’re safer for the environment and safer and the individuals riding.”
The effort ties in with what officials are trying to do throughout the area. Dave Myers, Kewaunee County Park Director, tells FOX 11 recent state tourism numbers indicate direct visitor spending in Kewaunee County is up 17.65 percent.
“We love it when people stayed in town and got a bite to eat, and went and saw other businesses. Outdoor recreation is a big thing here. We’re just trying to find ways to get people something to do in the summer.”
Myers says grant money and volunteer time will help pay for the improvements.
Froelich says the result will be well worth the effort.
“It’s just enjoyable. I like being outside. I like riding. It’s a good time.”
The Riverside ATV Park was built more than 20 years ago. Club leaders say about 2,000 visitors ride the trails each season.
