GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – A mental competency exam has been ordered by a judge for a man accused of breaking into an Allouez church and setting a fire.
The exam was requested last week by the lawyer representing Mackenzie Guillen.
Police and family have said Guillen has mental health issues and the exam will determine if he understands the proceedings and can assist in his own defense.
The evaluation will not address Guillen’s mental state at the time of the incident; because that issue can be raised at a later stage of the case.
On June 17, Guillen is currently scheduled to enter a plea to five charges.
Following the April 30 incident at St. Matthew Catholic Parish, the eighteen-year-old is being charged with burglary, arson, and three misdemeanor criminal damage to property charges.
Guillen allegedly set fire to papers on the floor of the church’s gathering space after smashing a window to gain access to the church.
St. Matthew staff members sent a letter to the court last week asking for psychiatric treatment, not punishment.
Guillen also allegedly vandalized three homes the same night prior to being arrested.
