MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – The man serving a life sentence for killing a Bellevue woman received another extension in a timeline to file his appeal to orders that he pay restitution to the family of victim Nicole VanderHeyden.
George Burch is serving a life sentence for killing VanderHeyden and dumping her body in a Bellevue field.
Extensions were granted to March 4 and then to Monday, after the original appeal was due in December.
Court records show that the new deadline is set for August 2.
In early May, a new attorney was appointed to Burch’s case.
Burch killed VanderHeyden outside her home on May 21, 2016, before dumping her body in a farm field and the case gained national attention as Burch blamed her boyfriend, Douglass Detrie.
Prosecutors used data from Detrie’s Fitbit to rebut Burch’s version of events and he was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole.
