ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ) – Two Green Bay area Red Cross volunteers are on the move to help flood victims.
Volunteers Jane Nesbitt and Larry Juse flew out of Austin Straubel International Airport Thursday to assist flood victims in Arkansas.
Nesbitt is a registered nurse and this is her sixth deployment with the Red Cross.
In the past, she has helped in flood disaster areas in Wisconsin and Houston.
“When you’re at home watching the news and you see the devastating photos of what these people are going through and you see pictures of their homes and you’re sitting in the comfort of your own chair and you’re just like, why not go help someone else? We have been trained as Red Cross volunteers for a purpose and our purpose is to go out and help people,” says Nesbitt.
Historic flooding has hit Arkansas, as well as neighboring states, and waters are only expected to continue rising.
Nesbitt says, as a nurse, she will be mostly helping people who lost their medical equipment and medications in the floods.
Additionally, she might be sent out to search rural areas for those who have not received medical assistance yet.
“Most rewarding is when somebody just comes back to you and says thank you; even though they may have lost everything that they have but maybe you’ve given them a small bit of hope or help back and they can turn around to you and say, thank you and that just warms your heart,” she explains.
