BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – Check your records.
If you have an uncashed check from Brown County, you’ll need to claim it within six months.
The Brown County Treasurer has released a list of hundreds of people with uncashed checks, which dates as far back as 2013.
“We post them out on our website to make people aware of it,” explains Brown County Deputy Treasurer Chuck Mahlik.
According to him, their uncashed check list typically runs into the hundreds, because simply, life happens and people forget.
“There’s times when, you know, someone maybe moves to a different address or something,” he explains. “And doesn’t forward their mail.”
The process of claiming an uncashed check is rather simple.
“To claim the funds all someone would have to do is come down to our office, we have a form for them to complete,” he says. “And they need to bring a form of ID with them.”
After that, the money is yours.
“If they do that, then we cut them a check back, like a replacement for it,” explains Mahlik.
There is a sense of urgency in the matter, though.
After a period of six months, the Treasurer will take possession of the money.
Some of the checks are rather minuscule, valued as low as $20, while others are much larger and go up to more than $3,000.
