OUTAGAMIE COUNTY (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Outagamie County Board voted 28-4 Tuesday night to move forward with a half-percent county sales tax — a wide enough margin to overcome a threatened veto by County Executive Tom Nelson.
The tax hike would mean you’ll pay an extra penny for every two dollars spent on most purchases in Outagamie County.
The county believes it could bring in $20 million next year.
A big chunk of that money would go toward reducing the net levy and debt.
Some of the money would also go to help for unnamed capital projects.
Supporters also say if sales tax go up they’ll be able to bring property taxes down.
But some opponents say lowering property taxes doesn’t help everyone and there aren’t enough specifics for where the money would go.
Nearly all of Wisconsin’s 72 counties have a local sales tax. Besides Outagamie County, the exceptions are Manitowoc, Menominee and Winnebago counties.
