SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ) – Woodlawn Cemetery in Shawano is the final resting place for many Shawano area veterans.
On Thursday, Boy Scout Troops and 4H members spent an hour with the AMVETS placing American flags at the gravesites of nearly 1,200 Veterans for Monday’s Memorial Day Ceremony.
“A little over 30 kids, and it takes an hour to walk around and put up all the flags.”
Shawano AMVETS Commander Stu Kohlin says it is a quick but effective hour every year.
“They realize how many 1,200 is and you see a lot of reverence with them stopping and looking at names.”
Kohlin says they have been doing this for a number of years and it also gives the organizations a chance to earn a badge or status by showing patriotism.
“We kind of encourage young civic organizations to do it, more so than the general public. It gives them something to do as an organization.”
He says even a young age, kids understand the idea of what they are doing while out there.
“I have my four-year-old grandson and he calls them the army guys, but he knows that is who we are putting up flags for.”
Woodlawn Cemetary is the site for the Shawano Memorial Day Ceremony Monday.
