OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) – The Oshkosh Police Department says they have a vehicle and a dead body pulled from Lake Winnebago, but still, little answers to go along with the story.
The department is currently investigating an incident in which a body was located in a vehicle in Lake Winnebago, about 150 yards from the Bowen Street Fishing Dock in the City of Oshkosh.
“The deceased male has been identified as a twenty-three-year-old male from Manitowoc,” explains Kate Mann with the Oshkosh Police Department. “The vehicle that he was located in is described as a red Volkswagon Golf.”
This all started early Monday morning, around 6 a.m., when the Oshkosh Police Department was notified that there was damage to the railing at the end of Bowen Street Fishing Dock.
The damage indicated that a vehicle may have caused the damage to the railing and may have entered into Lake Winnebago.
The Oshkosh Fire Department responded to that location and their dive team began a search of the lake, but they were unable to locate the vehicle.
The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department’s Dive team responded to the location and began a search utilizing sonar.
The vehicle was then located and inside of the vehicle was a deceased person.
Investigators later learned that a welfare check for the man was initiated on Monday.
“We were also informed that [the] Manitowoc Police Department had initiated a welfare check on May 20, as well,” says Officer Mann.
Law enforcement officials are hoping to receive additional information so they can better connect the dots in this incident.
