APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – Appleton Police have identified the victims in the East Washington Street shooting that killed Appleton Firefighter Mitchell Lundgaard and injured a female bystander as well as an Appleton Police Officer Wednesday evening.
Officer Paul Christensen was injured by gunfire and has been released from the hospital.
30-year-old Brittany L. Schowalter was also shot and is recovering from her injuries at the hospital.
Appleton Police officer Sergeant Christopher Biese, a 14-year veteran with the police department was also involved in the response.
Investigators say emergency crews were called out to the 100 block of East Washington Street to assist a male with a medical emergency. Officials say the male, identified as 48-year-old Ruben Houston of Wausau, arrived at the Valley Transit Center by bus.
Medical assistance was provided to the male while he was still on the bus and he was advised to seek additional medical care.
Houston started to walk towards the library and the incident escalated into shots being fired.
It has been determined that the two Appleton Police officers, Biese and Christensen fired at least one round each as a response to a threat. The total number of shots has not been determined.
Both officers have been placed on Administrative Assignment in accordance with the companies policy dealing with officer-involved critical incidents.
The Green Bay Police Department is investigating along with several other state agencies.
