SHAWANO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – Sturgeon have been seen spawning in the Red River just northwest of Shawano.
The Red River is a tributary of the Wolf River.
Ryan Koenigs, sturgeon biologist with the state DNR, says sturgeon have been spawning in the Red River for the past six or seven years.
The fish had been cut off from the Shawano area for decades by the construction of dams along the Wolf River.
However, the DNR and Menominee Tribe transported sturgeon to Keshena in 2011 in order to return them to traditional spawning grounds on the Menominee reservation.
Koenigs says that the sturgeon spawning season on the Wolf River and its tributaries farther south of the Shawano Dam took place last month.
